Mateo Velasquez Lopez was born in La Estancia de Quiche, El Quiche. Mateo grew up in Santa Cruz del Quiche He learned to weave at a young age with his father, Filiberto Velasquez Aguilar. Mateo’s father wove traditional Guatemalan corte, or traditional fabric worn as a skirt by indigenous women. Mateo immigrated to the United States in 2008, with his wife Terese Maineri de Velasquez who served in the Peace Corps in Guatemala. In Connecticut, Mateo constructed the wooden floor loom he used with his father in Santa Cruz. Now in Connecticut, Mateo adapted his weaving style to use thread found in Connecticut and Massachusetts. The outcome fabric ideal for table runners and scarfs.

"Warp and weft" are the two basic components used in weaving to turn thread or yarn into fabric. The lengthwise or longitudinal warp yarns are held stationary in tension on a frame or loom while the transverse weft (sometimes woof) is drawn through and inserted over-and-under the warp. Mateo uses unusual warp colors that give his weaving a unique look.
